چکیده
these four event types on the high-elevation Altiplano-Puna Plateau as well as in the main river catchments along the foothills of the Andes. Our results suggest that one to two particularly large squall lines per season, originating from northern Brazil, indirectly trigger large, long-lasting thunderstorms on the Altiplano Plateau. In general, we observe that extreme rainfall in the catchments north of approximately 20S typically originates from the Amazon Basin, while extreme rainfall at the eastern Andean foothills south of 20S and the Puna Plateau originates from southeastern South America.

The South American rainfall dipole: A complex network analysis of extreme events
Intraseasonal rainfall variability of the South American monsoon system is characterized by a pronounced dipole between southeastern South America and southeastern Brazil. Here we analyze the dynamical properties of extreme rainfall events associated with this dipole by combining a nonlinear synchronization measure with complex networks. We make the following main observations: (i) Our approach...
متن کاملExtreme Rainfall of the South American Monsoon System: A Dataset Comparison Using Complex Networks
In this study, the authors compare six different rainfall datasets for South America with a focus on their representation of extreme rainfall during the monsoon season (December–February): the gauge-calibrated TRMM 3B42 V7 satellite product; the near-real-time TRMM 3B42 V7 RT, the GPCP 18 daily (1DD) V1.2 satellite–gauge combination product, the Interim ECMWF Re-Analysis (ERA-Interim) product; ...
متن کاملPrediction of extreme floods in the eastern Central Andes based on a complex networks approach.
Changing climatic conditions have led to a significant increase in the magnitude and frequency of extreme rainfall events in the Central Andes of South America. These events are spatially extensive and often result in substantial natural hazards for population, economy and ecology. Here we develop a general framework to predict extreme events by introducing the concept of network divergence on ...
متن کاملOrographic barriers, high-resolution TRMM rainfall, and relief variations along the eastern Andes
[1] Quantifying the degree to which tectonic and erosive processes shape landscapes is key to understanding the evolution of tectonically active mountain belts. Here we explore the interplay of these two processes along the humid, eastern flank of the South American Andes. We use high-resolution Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM) and SRTM data to characterize elevation, relief, and hi...
متن کاملExtreme Summer Convection in South America
Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Precipitation Radar (PR) and National Centers for Environmental Prediction–National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCEP–NCAR) reanalysis data are used to indicate mechanisms responsible for extreme summer convection over South America. The threedimensional reflectivity field is analyzed to define three types of extreme echo, deep convective cores, wi...
